Questions About Balloon Sinusplasty

What is Balloon Sinuplasty (BSP) with TruDiTM technology?

Balloon Sinuplasty uses a small compressed balloon that is threaded with computer guidance called TruDiTM into blocked sinus passages. TruDiTM like GPS for your sinuses. Once the balloon position is confirmed with TruDiTM the balloon is inflated and removed. The sinus passages are widened by the inflated balloon. The balloon does not stay in the sinuses. The sinus passages are widened by the inflated balloon.

 

Can BSP be combined with other procedures?

Yes, Dr. Atkins combine BSP with other procedures. There are many other conditions that present to our office such as nasal congestion, runny nose, postnasal drainage, sinus pain, and headaches that can benefit from other procedures.

 

Does BSP really work?

Absolutely, over 96% of people who’ve had BSP report being symptom free years later.

 

Who performs the surgery? 

This is a very important question. Dr. Atkins has been performing BSP since 2006. He has more experience than any other ENT surgeon in Texas and teaches his techniques to ENT’s from all over the country.

 

Does BSP hurt?

Dr. Atkins developed protocols for both IV sedation and local anesthesia to insure that you are comfortable and pain free during the procedure. Our patients report no pain during the procedure. However, due to the fact you’re still having something done in your sinus, there’s likely to be a bit of tenderness and soreness afterward. 

 

Will my nose look different?

No, this is one of our most common questions. Your nose will look exactly the same after your procedure.

 

Will my nose be packed?

No, there is no need for your nose to be packed if you are having BSP.

 

What can I expect in terms of recovery? 

Your nose may be slightly sore for a few days after your procedure. You should be able to resume a normal diet immediately after your procedure and able to return to work in 24 hours.

 

How do I prepare for surgery?

Once you have scheduled your BPS we will give you instructions for before and after BSP. Preparing for you BSP is simple.  

 

What are my treatment options if I choose not to have surgery?

Surgery is not the answer for everyone. In fact, Dr. Atkins recommends surgery for about  30% of our new patients. Most people can be managed with prescription and over the counter medications. 

 

Will my insurance pay for my BSP?

Yes, BSP is covered by most insurance plans, many times BSP is 100% covered . At Atkins Expert Sinus Care we believe in no financial surprises. We will let you know exactly what your out of pocket expenses will be.

 

Is BSP covered by Medicare?

Yes, Medicare covers BPS and other procedures for runny nose, congestion, drainage and sinus headaches.
